At Empowered Kidney Care we believe the right medications and patient empowerment are the keys to preserving kidney function. Historically, patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) often donโt get proper treatment until itโs too late, but now Dr. Richard Gibney and his team at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio are flipping traditional nephrology on its head by moving โupstream.โ
After an initial period of data gathering of six months, the results spoke for themselves. โIn six months, we havenโt put a single CKD patient on dialysis, and thatโs a radical departure of what weโve done before,โ reported Dr. Gibney.
As time goes on and more data is collected, this empowered kidney care model continues to gain traction. After an additional four months of data collection, we now have ten months of results from March 1 through December 31, 2021.
Dr. Richard Gibney's story:
EKC Founder Dr. Richard Gibney has been in the kidney care industry for over four decades, and in 2016 he won The American Association of Kidney Patients Medal of Excellence Award.
For most of his career, Dr. Gibney simply didnโt know that there were alternatives to the status quo. His dialysis units were all better than average, but he began to wonderโฆ what if good enough simply isnโt good enough? He genuinely cared about all of his patients and staff, and he realized that the system was letting them all down.
In 2006, a partnership with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) inspired him to innovate. Years later, his eyes were further opened by a visit from two healthcare professionals from an acclaimed dialysis program in Jonkoping, Sweden.
In 2014, he led the successful transformation of 11 dialysis units in central Texas to an empowered model, serving over 500 patients with exceptional results.
Today, Dr. Gibney and his specialized team of doctors, nurses, and technicians have shifted their focus "upstream" to successfully preserve kidney function for patients with CKD.
